  • Hairdressing and ecology, a quite promising couple

  • We have never seen a thick and toxic cloud going out of a hair salon, and hairdressers don't pour spray, hair gel and other shampoo in rivers. However, a hair salon is not a really ecological place. The founding team of the Carré d’Art hair salons, understood that and is trying to minimize their impact on the environment on a daily basis.

mon coiffeur s'engageIn the city of Reims, there are two Carré d’Art salons, directed by three associates : Magaly, the creator, Pascale the management supervisor and Carole the manager. All three are hairdressers, specialized in TIE & DYE, African hair/mixed-race hair, Brazilian or Japanese hair treatment, brides hairstyles and specialised advice... and also in ecology as in the past few years the became aware of it : “Our job is a source of pollution though”, she said during an interview gave to LiveCoiffure.com. Discovered thanks to their eco-responsible actions, Carré d’Art was given, three years ago, the label “Sustainable development, my hairdresser is committing himself”, which shows his actions towards nature.

    Concrete measures

Carré d’Art hair salons exist since 1995 and have received several awards, like the “Le Prix Régional du développement durable”, (Sustainable Development Regional Award) in 2008.

Two hair salons are equipped to fight against water, heating and electricity waste. LED bulbs for light and devices, water thrifty jet shower tool for wash basins, recycling waste and “green” products, has slowly appeared at Carole, Magaly and Pascale's.

Through a public awareness day and discovery rooms, the owners wanted to make their teams aware to simple moves that can change everything and avoid wasting.

    The importance of water

It is mainly the excessive use of water that worries the three eco-hairdressers. “We are always washing hair, always rinsing them. What will we do tomorrow if they start imposing water measures ?” asked Carole, aware of this element importance in hairdressing. Committed, she sends a message to her fellow members : “Don't be afraid to act for the label “ Sustainable development, my hairdresser is committing himself”, because it is our job to show the way...we have the tools to touch people, so we should use them !” So, when are you doing your “éco-brushing”?

The label “Sustainable development, my hairdresser is committing himself” is on the windows of all hairdressers who are committed. A file must be given to have access. More information on http://moncoiffeursengage.com/
