  • Luc Drouen : passionate artist and best hairdresser of the year

  • Luc Drouen is a very discrete man. Event tough is famous, he is not comfortable when he is on stage. Nevertheless, this hairdresser/make-up artist convinced the Hairdressing Awards jury, and gained the title of the 2012 Best Hairdresser. Talented and in love with his work, the artist accepted to give LiveCoiffure.com an interview.

LiveCoiffure.com: Being elected as the 2012 Best Hairdresser, what does that mean to you ? Luc Drouen : Ask Jean Dujardin what all his rewards mean to him... it's huge, there is no word to express this feeling ! At first, I didn't want to enter for this competition, my friends pushed me to do it : and I can thank them for that ! I am the first to be surprise at my success. Despite my 34 years of career, I don't consider my work to be perfect, I always want to rework it, perfect it. One should not rest on his laurels.   LC: Are you hopping that this reward will have an impact on your reputation ? LD: My agent is thrilled but me, I am the kind of person who stays in the background, I like to work behind the scenes and be discrete. You know, in the hairdressing world, there are two types of persons : the big-headed ones and the others. And I am not big-headed. I would rather work on the essential than appearances. After all, we only are craftsmen, and we should not forget it.

LC: How did you manage to reach such level ? LD: I seized opportunities. Even if I did and seen a lot of thing during my 34 years of career, as many people did, I started me career normally, as an apprentice in a hair salon, then I had the opportunity to work in studio and I seized it! Opportunism is not a swear word. After all, we only have one life : we have to enjoy it while staying ourselves.     LC: What Alain Villiers, your mentor means to you? LD: Everything. He is like a spiritual father to me, he taught me how to be steady in my work and also humility.   LC: What do you think about current hairdressing fashions? LD : I can't say anything, because after all it is all subjective. In my opinion, everything must be worked : I like intellectual and artistic eclecticism and no matter what are the fashions, I always  try to have fun. When one starts to get bored, he has to change his profession !   LC : What will the hairdressing of tomorrow look like ? LD : Only a crazy person could answer that ! Hairdressing is still in its early stages. If we try to think about what it will be tomorrow, we'll become schizophrenic ! And I don't want to judge fashions. Each fashion can represent a person's dream.   LC : If you had to choose between make-up and hairdressing ? LD : I wouldn't choose. As I said it before, we only have one life, so nobody can force me to choose. In the past, I declined jobs because the photographers wanted me to choose between make-up and hairdressing. I am a make-up artist and a hairdresser, people have to respect that as I respect their work. They both form a package that create distinct personalities and labour-intense work.   LC : What do you think when you meet celebrities ? LD : Nothing really. Despite the fact that they are nice and really adorable, they are still like you and me. Of course, there are celebrities with whom I don't see myself working with, but that is because I'm a reserved person.

I like people who dare, who live to the full.

LC : You said that you wanted to do the hair of the muse Kiki de Montparnasse, why do you want to ? LD : She revolutionized womankind ! Wearing new make-up, new hairstyle, and she praised a new way of life, she became the incarnation of the freed woman...she invented a new type of canons of beauty, and for me it is an achievement. I like people who dare, who live to the full.     LC : And among our contemporaries, who would like to do the hair of ? LD : There are two persons : Michelle Obama, because she represents grace, charisma and generosity, and Inès de la Fressange, because for me she is the very essence of elegance, humour and beauty. I happened to bum into her and every time it was a delight. Some can believe that she is big-headed, but it's absolutely not the case ! And I love the fact that she faithful to her beauty team, I respect that.   LC : Do you have a message for future generations ?  LD : Work, work and work. And most of all be curious.
