  • As a photographer with 35 years of experience in capturing the images of hairdressing show, I want to share my observations and my vision of the shows through the web magazine Livecoiffure.com which is for a large public but followed also by the hairdressers because they are often highlighted in the articles dedicated to professionals.

  • It’s always through a lens then in front of the picture that the details can be seen thanks to our objectivity, the attitude of detachment. And sometimes some picture are unusable because of details. It is the list of these essential points that I offer to share with the hairdressers specialists of the stage.

During the bi-annual presentations of collections, during events related to launchings of new products, the hairdressers are required to stage their know-how to tell a story which evokes all the technical and artistic possibilities of their profession.

But on stage apart from the gestures which must be perfect, another element is important : This is the non-verbal communication. These evidences are sometimes forgotten because of the stage fright so in order to obtain exploitable pictures, here is my check list of the behaviors that should be practiced when you perform in front of others and especially when a photo report is done !

    - Standing straight with elegance
    - Working facing the audience and turning the chair of the model to present the profiles.
    - Shortening, if possible, the interminable backcombing step or blow dry steps, spraying or other product
    - Spending too much time on the finish.

This is maybe difficult to respect but some hairdressers can do it ! All of that must be avoided because the photographers can’t take any picture.

In terms of presentation, other points make the difference between a beautiful performance and another one, here are the noticed OCD :

    - Arriving on stage with your material - brushes, combs, products, hair drier - ¡ in the arms !
    - Holding the spray between the legs
    - Opening the hairpins with the teeth or worse keeping the hairpins in the mouth and chewing for example…
    - Being a spectator of your own show
    - Laughing because of the commentaries of the producer in the earpiece

    - Humming on the soundstrack. It is better to assume it completely and having it as an element of the show like some hairdressers
    - Talking with your model knowing that everything is generally shown on a giant screen.

The place on the stage according to the lights is also very essential. For example, you must avoid being in the back of the stage or on the border of the front stage where there is not a lot of light.

Other essential point, the brief of the models because they also are part of the show. We need a short break facing the audience for the pictures. With an horizontal look better than directed toward the feet. In my opinion, the hands on the hips during the fashion show seems too...fifties, you better choose a couture or ready-to-wear walking. And, furthermore, for some choreographies, you could avoid the movements of the arms at the level of the face, the videos and the pictures would be of a better quality.
