Coco Chanel freed women regarding clothes but the one who did the same at the hairdressing level with backcombing, curlers… is named Vidal Sassoon. We couldn’t ignore this artistic genius during our London week !

    Christine Margossian

When he opened his salon in London in 1954, her first client was Mary Quant, creator of the mini-skirt. The hairdresser worked the hair like a real designer creating geometric shapes which structured the face with a new femininity. It was for a total look fitting with the mini skirt that appeared his famous bob. After decades of hairdressing with xxl volume women discover the sensation to feel their hair between their fingers! Goodbye beehives and others postiches. In London the fashion women adopt the bob which enables them to wash their hair and go to work immediately like men. The revolution is on the go helped by the famous makeover of Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby- 1968- and the answer to her husband surprised who asked her « who did that ?... this is a haircut by Vidal Sassoon ». Other people of the time worn that haircut, like Twiggy the model. In addition to his talent with the scissors, Vidal has an innate sense of marketing. He opened academies, created a range of hair products which will help him to build an empire until its sale in 1983. The brand belongs now to Procter & Gamble. From Figaro to business man, he becomes a model for many hairdressers all over the world.

A style which is still recognizable among others

The bob haircut by Nancy Kwan, the haircut five point, - like a helmet ending with peaks on the ear and W in the neck- presented on Grace Coddington, today artistic director of the magazine Vogue américain. The asymmetric haircut in V… without forgetting the hair color techniques to highlight these new shapes! Nowadays, throughout the world, everybody use more or less the techniques of Sir Vidal Sassoon !
